This independently acknowledges their competency to provide specific fire protection services.

In simple terms, first party certification is when a provider tells their potential customer that they are competent and knows what they are doing.

Second party certification involves someone else – for instance another customer or a trade association – who states that they are competent.

Third Party Certification takes this to another level completely, as here an independent certification body (which is accredited by the government body UKAS), sends assessors trained in the specific skills required and working to appropriate standards, to inspect the company usually on an annual basis. They check and verify the required competencies and management systems to ensure that the provider can do what they say.

BAFE develops third party certification schemes with a range of industry stakeholders and works only with UKAS accredited Certification Bodies to thoroughly assess and approve companies to these standards.

• Not all BAFE registered companies are certified to cover all types of fire protection services. Check what schemes they are registered to when searching for a company.

• If you require a Fire Risk Assessment for your premises, search for a company registered to our Life Safety Fire Risk Assessment SP205 scheme.

• If you require maintenance services on your fire extinguishers, search for a company registered to our Competency of Portable Fire Extinguisher Organisations and Technicians SP101 scheme. With this scheme you can also request to see the technicians BAFE ID card that is issued only after a successful registration of that technician.

• If you require a fire detection and alarm system, search for a company registered to our Fire Detection and Alarm Systems SP203-1 scheme. The SP203 schemes are modular, so ensure they are certified in the area you require. These areas are: system design, installation, commissioning and maintenance.

• If you require services relating to emergency lighting, search for a company registered to our Emergency Lighting Systems SP203-4 scheme. Again, this scheme is modular, so ensure they are certified in the area you require. These areas are: system design, installation, commissioning and maintenance.
